Cipro Description - Why is Cipro prescribed?
Cipro is also known generically as Ciprofloxacin. It is prescribed to treat bacterial infections. It has also been used to protect against anthrax exposure. Cipro is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by stopping the production of essential proteins which bacteria need to survive.
Cipro Indications
Cipro should not be used if you are allergic to any ingredient in Cipro or allergic to any other fluoroquinolone, such as levofloxacin. Cipro is also not recommended if you are taking cisapride or tizanidinehave or have recently received a live, oral typhoid vaccination.
Some medications may interact with Cipro including (but not limited to) hydantoins such as phenytoin, class 1A or class III antiarrhythmics such as cisapride, quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone & sotalol, corticosteroids such as prednisone, arsenic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or probenecid, anticoagulants such as warfarin), cyclosporine, methadone, methotrexate, sulfonylureas such as glyburide, theophyllines, tizanidine, or xanthines such as theophylline.

Common side effects of Cipro include Anxiety; diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, nightmares, vision changes, stomach upset, loss of appetite and restlessness. There are risks of serious side effects, including irregular heartbeat, tendon problems and seizures, as well as severe allergic reactions, severe or continuing diarrhea, bloody stools, dark urine, convulsions, chest pain, depression, easy bruising or bleeding, moderate to severe sunburn, muscle pain and yellowing of the eyes or skin.
